The Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church
The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.
Baptism is the sacrament of initiation and is considered the first step in becoming a member of the Catholic Church. It is performed by pouring water over the head of the person being baptized and it cleanses the person of original sin and makes them a child of God.
Confirmation is the sacrament of strengthening and is typically received by young adults. It is performed by a bishop or priest, who lays their hands on the person being confirmed and anoints them with chrism oil. This sacrament gives the person the gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as wisdom, understanding, and courage.
Eucharist is the sacrament of the Lord's Supper and is considered the most important sacrament in the Catholic Church. It is performed during Holy Mass, where bread and wine are consecrated and become the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.
Penance is the sacrament of reconciliation and is performed when a person confesses their sins to a priest. The priest absolves them of their sins. This sacrament reconciles the person with God and the Church.
Anointing of the sick is the sacrament of healing and is performed for those who are ill or dying. A priest anoints the person with oil and prays for their healing and peace.
Holy Orders is the sacrament of ordination and is performed when a man is ordained as a deacon, priest, or bishop.
Matrimony is the sacrament of marriage and is performed when a man and a woman are joined in marriage.
These sacraments are physical signs that communicate spiritual grace to the person who receives them. They all have been instituted by Jesus Christ and are essential parts of the Catholic faith.
